Mazes & Labyrinths |
 |
Mosaic Madness….and now Mazes
& Labyrinths! |
| What are they? |
- A Maze has a pathway to its heart in which there are a number
of turnings that you have to choose from.
- A Labyrinth has only a singular pathway to its heart in which
there are no turnings and so the individual just follows the path
|
| Working along the same Community
principles as for my Mosaics… |
| We can create
a Maze or Labyrinth |
- inside or out
- floor or wall
- temporary, semi permanent or permanent
|
| The heart or
central area could |
- Relate to the area it's placed within
- A celebration or a special event
- Planting
- Seating
|
| Making a Maze
or Labyrinth can: |
- Help to improve an individual's self esteem, motivation, ownership,
inclusion.
- Working together as a group to improve teamwork, communication,
community presence.
|
| For schools
how a Maze or Labyrinth links in with the NATIONAL CURRICULUM! |
- History - the story of Theseus and the Minotaur in Greek legends.
- Geography - use materials available in the local area.
- English & Literacy - Many stories or legends include mazes.
And when designing a Maze it could incorporate letters and be
used as a spelling activity.
- Numeracy. The design of a Maze has a strong mathematical element
to it. And when completed could be used as a game to improve a
child's numeracy skills
- Art & Design - It can be seen as an art medium in itself
and can be used to express a subject, event or celebration.
- Physical Education - If designed to be large scale such as outside
in a park or playground then a child walking the Maze is a physical
activity, but its advantage is that it's completely different
to the idea of a sport.
|
| Examples of
how they can be done! |
- An internal wall version using mosaic tiles.
- A school playground version painted onto the tarmac so not to
hinder the day to day activities of the playground.
- A temporary version using pegs laid out in a grid format. rope
is then used to link the pegs together and to solid up the walls.
- A grass version cut into the soil and the grass replaced with
timber mulch and/or planting to act as the walls.
- A wooden version using old logs, tree trunks, railway sleepers,
etc to form the walls allowing you to recycle the wood, which
as it rots away will help create a natural habitat and can be
easily removed if needed.

| The
Grove Park Maze in Weston-Super-Mare |
| This maze was created as
a 18x18m temporary maze for the February Half Term. We then ran children’s
workshops in the park to create over 120 flags which were placed with
in the walls of the maze.
Comments from parents:
- Really brilliant idea. Giving the kids something to do over
the holiday, kids really enjoyed the maze and loved making the
flags. It would be great to see a maze as a permanent feature
in the park.
- Enjoyed making the flags and coming to find them in the maze.
Good idea to get outside and something a bit different.
